Dr. Dean was the Senior Director of Information Security for Freddie Mac, and responsible for operation and technical IT security support. She (as an executive in IBM) was leading the Security, Privacy, Wireless, and Emerging Technology practice. In her role, she was responsible for the strategic direction, management, delivery, and customer satisfaction of the IBM Public Sector. She was responsible for overall annual sales budget of $150 million, oversaw annual budget of $1 billion in field of information security management expenditures, and managed an annual operation budget of $3 million. She worked closely with the IBM research team to identify and develop new technologies for clients, based on their requirements.
Before joining IBM in November 2000, she held various roles and responsibilities in the Office of the Department of the Navy Chief Information Officer (DON CIO). Mahnaz obtained her Master and Doctorate degrees on Public Policy and Information Technology from University of Southern California, where she developed a new decision-making model. She also earned her Master of Engineering degree from Cornell University, focusing on Robotics and Vision Systems. She wrote Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software and developed the hardware for that. She obtained the Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. She taught a course at the American Military University. She has authored multiple publications on Information Technology.
